Q: How do I install this mod? (a weapon model, reskin, new character model, etc)
A: Create a folder in your RE4 directory (usually found in C:/ Program Files/CAPCOM/RE4) called “XFILE”. Copy and paste the mod's files into this XFILE folder.
Q: How do I unzip a .rar/7zip file?
A: Use WinRar. Right click the .rar file and hit “Extract”.
Q: Where do I get WinRar?
A: Use Google. It's freeware. Ignore the "40 Day Purchase" thing -it will still work.
Q: How do I extract .dat files?
A: Look at this topic.
Q: OMG! Release this weapon mod for the (insert weapon here).
A: Just rename the PMD. If you need to know what PMD name corresponds to what, use this thread.
Q: How do I rename a PMD file?
A: Please kill yourself.
Q: How do I edit PMD files?
A: Download St. Vampyre's PMD Viewer (if it's a weapon file or somesuch). If it's a character file, use magnum's PMD to SMD converter. From there, use your favorite 3D program to edit the program. Once you've made your edits, export the new model as a .obj file (or a SMD if you're doing a character model). Use the PMD Viewer/magnum's tool to return the model to PMD format.
Q: What programs can I use for 3D modeling?
A: Blender is the best freeware program. If you're up for paying, or prefer an intuitive interface, Milkshape is your best bet.
Q: Can you give me a cracked Milkshape EXE?
A: No, sorry, that's illegal.
Q: Can you please put a silencer on this model?
A: You can do it yourself. Just extract your XFILE.dat, find “wep0201.pmd”, and open it using ST Vamp's PMD tool. Next, take the weapon model, export it to OBJ format, reassign the textures in your modeling program, and export it again. Import the custom weapon OBJ into wep0201.PMD, but leave the silencer as is. Congrats! You now have a silenced version of this model (provided it's a handgun...if it's a rifle or somesuch, you're gonna have to do your own edits).
Q: OMG! GIMME ALL T3H MODS j00 HAVE! LOLZ!
A: Again, please, kill yourself. Go take your Ritalin and wait for them to be released.
Q: CAN U PLZ DO THIS MODEL [insert model here].
A: Maybe, depending on if I can viably port the model over and like it enough. If I don't, then I've clearly outlined what you need to do above. If you'd like to know how to import your own models, see my "How to import CS models" thread- the general principles are all the same.
Q: HOW DO U USE [modeling program X]?
A: Google a tutorial for it.
Q: Why are you such an asshole?
A: Because I can't stand it when people don't even bother read the tutorials that other members work hard on, nor can I tolerate instant gratification n00bs who want people to hold their hand as they make subpar reskins and low quality models. It's not that hard to figure this stuff out yourself. Some of the board's members have practically giftwrapped modding for you people.
And in case you haven't figured it out, I'm kidding most of the time. Most of the time.
